Health impact assessment (HIA) of mining projects
The purpose of this course is to become familiar with the expected content of an environmental impact assessment (EIA) and very specifically the health component (HIA) of a development project. It can also serve as a basis in evaluating a program or a policy, although the analytical tools would be different. The course will enable the student to collaborate effectively in an environmental impact assessment process, and specifically the health impacts of mining projects, mainly to produce a framework or provide guidance detailing the selection of impacts for evaluation and the scope of the study, to validate and critically analyze each step in the process, and to comment on all the aspects of an HIA study or report.

What could the One Health perspective bring to public health?
The phrase ‘One Health” has gained international prominence in the past decade, mostly on the heels of emerging zoonotic infections. In an era where chronic disease and the social determinants of health predominate much of the public health agenda, what is the relevance of an approach founded on the prevention or response to emerging zoonotic diseases, most of which create low burdens of human morbidity and mortality? This Fireside chat will explore: how a perspective that links human well-being to the health of the world around us can provide insights into how to deal with complex health issues; and current research that demonstrates how paying attention to the world around us may help in detection and triage of environmental hazards; foster more resilient landscapes which provide important environmental health services and create capacity that will allow us to realize the Health for All ideal. This webinar starts at 1:30 p.m. (EDT).

Spotlight on knowledge translation methods and tools #3
Not all published literature is scientifically sound. Only some is valid, sound and useful. The correlate of this is that some research is unreliable and untrustworthy. Do you know how to tell the difference? How can you decide if the evidence you find is good enough and what the results actually mean? The answer is: by critically appraising the research evidence. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme’s (CASP) developed tools with checklists specifically designed to appraise: systematic reviews; randomized controlled trials (RCTs); qualitative research; economic evaluation studies; cohort studies; case control studies; and diagnostic test studies. The webinar starts at 11:30 a.m. (EDT).
